You are working on your computer and noticed that you are missing some of the bells and whistles like remote desktop, BitLocker encryption, or even enrolling into device manager. Come to find out, your operating system is running a home version of Windows. After purchasing the upgrade to Windows Pro, did you notice the install button is missing?
Have you tried the following solutions?
Set the date and time correctly
Clear Windows Store Cache
Run Windows Store Apps troubleshooter
Sign out and Sign in with your Microsoft Account in Microsoft Store
Reset or Re-register Microsoft Store
We have and none of these worked. We opened a case with Microsoft to find out what is going on. They weren’t able to explain exactly why this happens, only that it was a bug. We were directed to “Search” for a Windows 10 Pro Generic Key. To save some time, this was the page the Microsoft tech pulled up:
He then copied the Windows 10 Pro Key, then proceeded to:
Settings > System > About
From here you scroll down to “Change product key” and select that option.
Or Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key depending on your version
Then paste the product key that was copied earlier. Windows will then begin to upgrade to the Pro version and reboot.
We asked the tech if this would cause any issues with the genuineness of the operating system down the road and assured us it would not, since it checks a digital key stored in your system during the upgrade.
We hope this solution helps you upgrade Windows Home to Pro!
